Our biggest problem

There is something terribly wrong with the world that we are living in. No matter who you are or where you come from, you will agree with me that there is a problem in the world that we live in. You don't have to be a politician or an environmentalist to see the problem. In fact, most politicians and environmentalists don't see the real problem.

Politicians will tell us that the government is the ultimate problem. However, the problem isn't with the government, as many of us often want to believe, stressing that if only the government did everything right, all our problems would resolve. If only they banned guns, people would stop killing each other. If only the government wouldn’t go to war with other countries, we would have peace. Our biggest problem is not the government.

Environmentalists, on the other hand, will tell us that the issue is with the planet, there are just not enough resources, resulting in war and hunger. Despite the fact that there are over a 800 million people struggling with hunger every single day[1], the problem is not the planet’s lack of resources (FAO.org). The Earth does have limited resources but, if dispersed among everyone, it would be enough to sustain the entire population of the planet.

I am not saying that there is no problem with the system of government or the planet that we live on. I want to point to the root of those problems, to the ultimate problem. There is a problem with the system of government because it is run by people. There is a problem with the planet because people inhabit it. All the external problems point to an internal problem that lies in every single living person. That problem is sin.

Sin is the rejection of God’s will. It is the denial of God’s sovereign and ultimate authority over everything. What we experience in the world today are direct consequences of our rebellion. Since God is the source of all knowledge and perfect order, without Him, we make irrational decisions.

Until a nation acknowledges the rule and the dominion of God, it will continue to morally deteriorate. And until individuals acknowledge the sovereignty of their Creator, they will continue to increase in their insanity, blaming other people and systems, without noticing the ultimate problem of sin in their hearts.
